A ferrofluid is not a dangerous or toxic substance, but it is also not recommended as something children should play with. You will want to wear some old clothing and keep it away from anything you wish to protect because this fluid is extremely difficult to get out of anything and will usually leave a permanent stain. It is a good idea to wear gloves and some kind of eye protection, like goggles is recommended. Be sure that any dishes used are disposable because as they get near the fluid they may break.
